DuPont Unveils 'Monster Bridge’ at Dover

DOVER, Del. (May 10, 2004) – Jeff Gordon's primary sponsor of nearly 12 years has been telling him about the company's latest motor sports venture: the building of the “DuPont Monster Bridge” that crosses Dover International Speedway, where for the first time this June, fans literally sit atop the "Monster Mile" to watch all the racing action. “My first reaction to DuPont was, ‘You’re doing what?’” Gordon said. "Then, when they explained to me that the project was possible because of DuPont products like Tyvek and SentryGlas, it made a lot of sense. "Tyvek will keep rain and wind out, and SentryGlas, which doesn't shatter, is what will keep the fans safe up there. I've seen how these products are made and tested to understand how they work, and it's really pretty amazing." When Gordon gets to the one-mile oval in June, he will get the full experience from the most exciting seat in sports when he broadcasts live from the bridge. He will pull FOX Sports broadcaster Jeff Hammond from his "Hollywood Hotel" to help explain to viewers what the bridge is all about during Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series event. Then on Sunday, Gordon will wave to the fans on the bridge from below in his No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet as he takes a parade lap before the start of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at a place where he has recorded four career victories. "I'm always excited to go to Dover," Gordon said. "It's a place where the driver really makes a difference. It's a lot of fun racing here and I think it's a place where we can really put on a show for the fans as well as our friends at DuPont since Dover is their home track. "When I go on the bridge during the Busch race, I'll really be able to get a feel for what the fans will experience. Who knows, maybe I can even get a better read on which lines these guys are taking to get around this place." In addition to Tyvek CommercialWrap and SentryGlas Plus, another 10 DuPont products and building innovations went into the construction of the bridge ranging from DuPont Imron polyurethane top coats and DuPont Corian solid surfaces.
