CONCORD, N.C. -- When the Sprint Showdown gets underway, Chase Elliott will look to battle his way into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race by winning one of the three segments.
He'll take the green flag for the first segment from the pole position.
The starting order for the first 20-lap segment was to be set by practice speed on Friday. But due to inclement weather, the practice session was cancelled.
That left the starting grid to be determined by points -- and Elliott leads all Showdown drivers in that category, currently seventh in the overall point standings.
That earned him the pole position.
It's the third time in the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season that Elliott will start at the front of the pack -- he earned the pole this month at Talladega Superspeedway and became the youngest Daytona 500 pole-sitter in Sprint Cup history at the start of the season.
The Sprint Showdown is divided into three segments -- two 20-lap portions and a final 10-lap sprint.
