CONCORD, N.C. -- With the Summer Olympics in full swing -- and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on an off week -- it's the perfect storm for Chase Elliott to catch some of the action.

"I’ve always been a fan of the Olympics," he said last week at Watkins Glen. "Who isn’t? Any time you have a chance to cheer-on your country and keep up with that medal count."

As of Thursday morning, the United States of America led the overal medal count with 32 -- including the most gold medals of any country with 11.

Elliott said it doesn't matter the sport, he just enjoys seeing the competition.

"I can find entertainment in watching the majority of them," he explained. "Even things that you don’t necessarily know a lot about, whether it’s swimming or golf or whatever it is, I can make it entertaining and watch it. Those guys are so good at what they do and they bring such a competition level to the games, it’s impressive. I can find entertainment and you always have somebody to pull for in the USA. So, I’m good with that."

Speaking of swimming, Jimmie Johnson shared congratulations on Twitter with on Olympic bronze medalist who trains in the same pool as the driver in Charlotte.

As for Elliott, he said if he could pick any Olympic sport in which to participate, he might choose one where he needs a little extra work.

“I wish I could play golf a little better than I do currently," he said. "I’m not a very good golfer, but definitely would like to improve upon that.”
