CONCORD, N.C. -- On Labor Day weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will head to Darlington Raceway for the Southern 500.
And for the second consecutive year, the race will have a distinctly retro vibe.
All four Hendrick Motorsports cars will feature throwback schemes, and Tuesday morning Lowe's Racing shared a unique poster that showcases the origin of Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet SS for the race.
Johnson's ride is modeled after one that David Pearson drove -- in the driver's seat as a substitute for Dale Earnhardt -- in 1979.
"We all know how great David Pearson was at Darlington and how many races he had won there, so we thought that this would be an amazing tie-in back to the Darlington, vintage-style racing," No. 48 team crew chief Chad Knaus explained.
