DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Wednesday night’s DAYTONA 500 qualifying did more than just set the front row for Sunday’s 67th running of the Great American Race.
It also set the starting lineup for Thursday night’s Duel at Daytona races.
But what are the Duels?
Glad you asked.
The Daytona Duels are a pair of 150-mile races used to set positions 3-40 (or 41) in the starting grid for Sunday’s main event. Though the length and format of the races have changed over the years, the event has been part of Speedweek since its creation in 1959.
So, how does it work?
Allow us to explain:
How do the Daytona Duels work?
Based on Wednesday night's single-lap qualifying times, the field was split into two Duel at Daytona races. The first race will be contested by drivers that qualified in odd-numbered positions while the second race will be made up of cars in even-numbered positions. The finishing order of the first race will set the odd-numbered starting spots on Sunday and the second will determine the evens. The exception is the front row, with those two positions being locked up on Wednesday.
Kyle Larson led Hendrick Motorsports in single-lap qualifying time, laying down the 10th-best circuit on Wednesday and he'll start 10th in the second Duel, one spot ahead of teammate Alex Bowman. Meanwhile, Chase Elliott (eighth) and William Byron (11th) will both fire off in Duel No. 2.
