CONCORD, N.C. – It’s time to take on the Tricky Triangle.
This week, our haulers are headed through the Pennsylvania mountains en route to Pocono Raceway, a track known for its lack of a fourth turn.
Since Hendrick Motorsports started racing at Pocono in 1984, its drivers have collected a total of 17 wins over the years at the 2.5-mile track, including each of the last five races.
While looking forward to the race this weekend, let’s take a trip down memory lane at three memorable Hendrick Motorsports moments from Pocono.
June 19, 1988 – The 1988 season marked Geoff Bodine’s fifth year racing with Hendrick Motorsports and his seventh year racing at the triangular track of Pocono. When the green flag dropped, he started the race third and led a total of 90 out of the 200 laps. June 19, 1988, turned out to be a good day for Bodine as he led the way to his first win at Pocono and his first win of that season.
Aug. 5, 2012 - The Tricky Triangle proved to be not so tricky once again for Jeff Gordon. With five wins at the 2.5-mile track to that point, Gordon was ready for another one. During the race he made his way to the front from his starting position of 27th. He led eight laps on the way into Victory Lane, with teammate Kasey Kahne finishing right behind him in second. Gordon now has the most wins at Pocono Raceway of all active drivers.
Aug. 3, 2014 – Earlier in the season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his first race at Pocono, and now he was back looking to sweep the track. After qualifying ninth, he didn’t take the lead until the last 14 laps of the race. He led the pack across the finish line and claimed the checkered flag for the second time at Pocono Raceway that season. This weekend Earnhardt is hoping to bring home a victory once again and become one of only three drivers to win at Pocono three times in a row.
