Memorable moments at the Brickyard

As one of NASCAR’s most storied tracks, Indianapolis Motor Speedway has played host to several notable races for Hendrick Motorsports over the years. While the teams prepare to head to the Brickyard this weekend, let’s take a look at some of the organization’s memorable moments at the track.

Aug. 6, 1994: A young Jeff Gordon was looking for his second win of the 1994 season – and his Cup career – when he arrived at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the inaugural Brickyard 400. After securing a third-place qualifying slot, Gordon led 93 of 160 laps at the Brickyard before ultimately taking the checkered flag.

Aug. 8, 2004: Gordon gave a dominating performance during the 2004 Brickyard 400, pacing the field for 124 of 160 laps en route to his fourth Cup win at Indianapolis. The event fell on the 10-year anniversary of Gordon’s first Brickyard win and made him the all-time Cup leader in victories at the 2.5-mile oval. Today, Gordon shares the title with teammate Jimmie Johnson. 

July 27, 2008: Johnson began the 2008 Brickyard 400 from the top position and led for 71 laps before recording his second victory of the season. Johnson would go on to win five more races in 2008, ultimately taking home his third straight championship title at the year’s conclusion.
