LAS VEGAS -- Friday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kasey Kahne laid down the fastest qualifying lap out of the Hendrick Motorsports drivers for the second week in a row.
The driver of the No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS advanced to the final round of qualifying, earning an eighth-place starting position for Sunday.
Teammate Jimmie Johnson also joined the final 12 in the third round and will take the green flag in 11th.
Chase Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr. both made it to the second round of qualifying but did not advance to the final round. They will roll off the grid 13th and 20th, respectively, on Sunday.
“Last week we missed it by one but we were in the wrong cut-off bracket, so at least we missed the top 12 by one this week and not the top 24,” Elliott said. “It’s an improvement -- it’s not perfect but we’re excited about being better than last week so we’ll take it and try to get better for the race.”
Kurt Busch earned the pole position for Sunday’s race, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on FOX.
